Q

What is adaptive immunity?

A

Very specific; a set of defensives and is activated only after exposure to a specific pathogen

Q

What are lymphocytes and what do they do?

A

White blood cells; spend time in the blood and tissues of the lymphatic system, responsible for adaptive immunity, provide specialized defenses that act on pathogens either in body fluid or cells.

Q

What is a vaccine?

A

Composed of a harmless variant or part of a disease called a microbe, such as a dead or weakened virus or a piece of a virus.

Q

What are the two categories of lymphocytes and what is the functional difference between these two categories?

A

B-cells: grow in bone marrow, receptors recognize antigens, evened against bacteria and viruses in body fluid, secrete antibodies, no aid in antibody memory
T-cells: matured in thymus, receptors recognize antigens, cell mediate response ( attack cells infected with bacteria or viruses)
