Chapter 28 - Nervous System Flashcards
What are the basic structure of nerve cells and what is the path of a signal traveling through that nerve cell?
The basic structures of nerve cells dendrites, into the cell body, through the axon, and then to the synaptic terminals.
What are the three functions of the nervous system?
Sensory input, integration, and motor output
Sensory input - conduction of signals from sensory receptors
Integration - analysis and interpretation of sensory signals and the formulation of appropriate responses
Motor output - the conduction of signals from the integration centers to the muscle cells
What are the two regions of the nervous system and what structures are involved in each region?
the central nervous system which is the brain and spinal cord and then the peripheral nervous system which is everything else.
What are the five general regions of the brain?
Cerebrum, hindbrain and midbrain, cerebellum, thalamus, and hypothalamus
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Homeostasis
What is the function of the hindbrain and mindbrain?
- “The Brain Stem”
- Coordinates information
- Controls primitive actions
What is the function of the cerebellum?
- Coordination
- Learning and remembering
- Body movement
What is the function of the thalamus?
- Sensory input
- Motor output
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
- homeostasis
