Herbivore - eats vegetation
Carnivore - eats meat
Omnivore - eats vegetation and meat
What are the seven primary organs of the digestive system and what is the function of each?
Oral cavity - food Esophagus - transport to stomach Stomach - food storage Small intestine - absorb Large intestine - concentrates waste Rectum - stores feces Anus - waste
What are the structures that assist digestion and how do they work?
Salivary glands - begins chemical breakdowns and moistens food
Gallbladder - stores bile
Liver - produces bile and helps with bile that breaks down fat
Pancreas - helps neutralize acid and produce digestion enzymes
What is the purpose of digestion?
To gain nutrients for the body
Describe the increasing complexity of the digestive system from the invertebrate animal to the vertebrate animal to the human.
Invertebrates - simple sack of enzymes, one opening
Vertebrates - esophagus, crop not as closed
Humans - stomach, intestines, crop, two openings
