Chapter 22 - Gas Exchange Flashcards
What is the purpose of gas exchange?
Take oxygen in and exhale carbon dioxide
What are the three phases in gas exchange and what happens in each phase?
Breathing, transport of oxygen, and exchange of gases.
Breathing - inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide
Transport of oxygen - to go throughout the whole body
Exchange of gases - cells to take up oxygen and release carbon dioxide
Describe gas exchange in an earthworm, squid, and frog
Earthworm - breathes primarily across its skin
Squid - use gills and oxygen and deoxygenated blood cross
Frog - tadpole has gills, frogs have lungs
Describe gas exchange in a human
Goes through the nose, then the pharynx, to the larynx, to the trachea to the lungs.
What is the role of the hemoglobin in breathing?
Carry oxygen
