Chapter 29 Flashcards
Any kind of signal that carries info- can be detected
Stimuli
The way an organism reacts to stimuli in its environment- some are influenced by genes
Behavior
Single, specific reaction to a stimuli
response
If a behavior that is influenced by genes increases an individuals fitness….
behavior will spread through a population.
Instinctual behavior appears in fully functional form first time they are performed, even though the animal had no previous experience with the stimuli to which it responds.
innate behavior
4 types of learning
- Habituation
- classical conditioning
- operate conditioning
- Insight learning
Process by which an animal decreases its response to a repetitive stimulus that neither rewards nor harms the animal
Habituation
Form of learning in which a certain stimulus comes to produce a particular response, usually through association with a positive or negative experience.
classical conditioning
Occurs when an animal learns to behave in a certain way through repeated practice, to receive award or avoid punishment. EX: dog sits, receives treat. Results- Dog will sit all the time.
Operate conditioning
Occurs when an animal applies something it has already learned to a new situation, without a period of trial/error.
Insight learning
Primates/Humans are the only animals capable of this type of learning_______________.
Insight learning
Behavior in which the animal recognizes/follows the first moving object they see during critical time in their early life. Behavior cant be changed. EX: babies follow mother goose.
Imprinting
Behavioral cycles that occur daily.
Circadian rhythm
The seasonal movement from one environment to another.
Migration
Behavior during which member of 1 sex advertise their willingness to mate.- members of opposite sex which they will accept. Signals are sent from males in form of sound, visual displays or chemicals to attract females.
courtship
Series of behaviors done by all members of that population-communicating
Rituals
Specific area that is occupied/protected by an animal or group of animals
-prevent others from using limited resources
- food, water, nesting sites and potential mates.
territory
Threatening behavior that 1 animal uses to exert dominance over another.
- inherited by a certain gene.
aggression
Group of animals of some species that interact closely and often cooperate.
-offer protection from predator
Animal Society
Passing of information from 1 organism to another.
communication
4 types of communicating
- visual
- sound
- touch
- chemical signals
Insects release _________, or _____________ to attract insects
pheromones/chemicals
Theory that helping a relative survive increases the chance of transmitting ones own gene is____ _____
kin selection
Behavior is possible because of the _______ ______
nervous system
