Chapter 25 Reproductive System Flashcards
Sex organs/genitalia
- primary sex organs (gonads)- produce sex cells (gametes): in males: testes produce sperm; in females: ovaries produce an ovum (egg)
Accessory sex organs- all other aspects of the repro anatomy that nourish and transport the gametes + external genitalia
Male repro anat
Know: testis seminiferous tubules (sperm makers) epididymis (head, body, tail; superior to inferior) ductus deferens spermaticord
Scrotum
- testes are housed in scrotum, a sac-like structure of skin and superficial fascia
- dartos muscle- layer of smooth muscle which crinkles scrotal skin to increase thickness
- cremaster muscles- bands of skeletal muscle that extend inferiorly from internal obliques and elevate testes
Cremaster muscles elevate testes in cold and descend in hot
Dartos muscle uncrinkles in hot (for cooling) and wrinkles in cold
Fascia surrounds the contents of the____:
spermaticord
i.e. vessels, nerves and ductus deferens
Identify the following (male repro):
Bublourethral gland and duct Ejaculatory duct: where sperm meets seminal fl Ampula of ductus deferens Seminal vesicle Prostate
Accessory Glands
- Seminal vesicles-posterior and superior to urinary bladder; duct meets with ampula of vas deferens to become ejaculatory duct (which dumps into prostatic urethra); source of ~60% of seminal fluid
- Prostate- encircles first part of urethra just inferior to urinary bladder; source of ~30% of seminal fluid
- Bulbourethral glands- pea-sized glands inferior to prostate; lubricates urethra and neutralizes acidic urine in urethra
Penis
- external genitalia: penis/scrotum
- Parts of penis:
Root- attached to body; formed by the crus- attachment of corpora cavernosa to pubic bones
free body- not attached to body
glans penis- enlarged tip of shaft
Internal erectile tissue of penis
- Cylindrical bodies of erectile tissue: CT tube filled with sponge-like network of smooth muscle, CT, and vascular spaces
- Corpus spongiosum (unpaired-ventral): surrounds the spongy urethra; forms the glans penis distally; forms the bulb of the penis (middle of root)
- Corpus Cavernosum (paired-dorsal)- form the crura/crus (lateral parts of root)
Urogenital diaphragm
triangular sheet of skeletal muscle surrounding the urethra
Female repro structures:
Ovarian ligament (ovary to uterus attachment) Broad Ligament- sheet like ligament behind ovary Round Ligament
Fertilization usually occurs in the?
Ampulla
Anatomy of Uterine tubes and Uterus
Fimbriae Infundibulum Ampulla Isthmus of fallopian tube Fundus Body Isthmus of uterus cervix fornix
Uterus is________? (positional)
anteverted (cervix points dorsal and down)
Walls of Uterus (3 layers)
- Perimetrium - outer, serous membrane (peritoneum)
- myometrium- bulky, middle layer of smooth muscle tissue
- endometrium- mucosal lining of uterine cavity that is a functional layer nearest the lumen (shed during menstruation) with a basal layer that forms a new functional layer after menstruation
Vagina
- functions as a birth canal and receives penis/semen during intercourse
