CHAPTER 25 ERGONOMICS Flashcards
Chapter 25 ( ERGONOMICS )
Ergonomics ?
Adaption of the work environment to the human body.
Goal of the importance for Ergonomics?
Help employees stay healthy and perform work more effectively by changing the workplace design, modifying instruments, strengthen muscles, taking breaks, using certain products, and proper training.
musculoskeletal disorders
headaches, neck and shoulder pain, & CTS. many disorders lead to career- ending among dental assistants.
bad work ethics, bad work posture, and incorrect use of instruments can lead to these disorders
Ergonomics in the dental Office
dental team work in a seated position, using excessive movement
Posture
ability for a DA to reach for, hold, and use equipment. It can also affect how long they can perform a task.
Neutral posture
ideal position to work
Problem Posture
leaning forward, twisting, overbending, and overreaching
reaching is only allowed in the front and not behind the DA
Repetition and Force
Repetitive motion, over flexion, and overextension of the wrist can significantly increase the risk for
CUMULATIVE TRAUMA DISORDERS ( CTDs )
Prevention of CTDs & CTS
take periodic breaks, when scheduling patients, alternate difficult procedures with less stressful procedures.
Symptoms of CTS & CTDs
- painful tingling feeling in one pr both hands that occurs at night.
- decrease ability to squeeze objects ( hard to form a fist )
3.thenar muscle weakens, causing feeling in decreased handgrip.
GLOVES
Ambidextrous gloves ( gloves that are worn out ) exert excessive tension on the hypothenar eminence.
gloves that are properly fitting support the hand in a natural position
Muscle- strengthening exercises
stretching and strengthening the arms, fingers, neck, and back will help everything remain strong and healthy
stretch throughout the work day
Hand Relief
resting your hands is one of the MOST important way to prevent CTS
hand stretching help as well
Eye Relief
1 can happen by staring intensely into depth for a long period of time.
2. to form relief focus your eyes at a distance for 20 seconds, practice frequently throughout the day.
Back & Shoulder relief
full back release
1. head roll forward slowly and allow the arms and head to fall between the knees
2. hold for a few seconds
3. bring head up last to stop position correctly
4. shoulder shrugs
