Chapter 24 Soft Tissue Injuries Flashcards
What is the leading form of injury?
SOFT TISSUE trauma
What are 3 types of Soft Tissue Injuries?
CLOSED INJURIES occurs beneath the skin or mucous membrane OPEN JURIES a break in the surface of the skin or mucous membrane BURNS
During the early stages of inflammation, the body releases what?
The cells release HISTAMINE which causes dilation of the blood vessels, increasing blood flow, to the injured area and results in a reddened, warm area immediately around the site
What occurs when skin is exposed to temperatures higher than 111*F?
THERMAL BURNS
How does a HEMATOMA occur?
It occurs when a large blood vessel is damaged and bleeds rapidly
The buildup of blood produces a blue or black discoloration is called
ECCHYMOSIS
What can develop after an area of the body has been trapped for longer than 4 hours and arterial blood flow has been compromised?
CRUSH SYNDROME; metabolic derangement that can lead to RENAL FAILURE and DEATH
What is the hallmark sign of COMPARTMENT SYNDROME?
Pain out of Proportion to the Injury
What are the 4 types of OPEN Soft Tissue Wounds?
ABRASIONS, LACERATIONS, AVULSIONS, PENETRATING WOUNDS
What is the difference between an open injury and a closed injury?
The protective layer of skin is damaged in an open injury
A wound of the superficial layer of the skin is called?
ABRASION (does not penetrate the dermis, but blood may ooze)
What is a jagged cut caused by a sharp object?
LACERATION
What is the difference between a LACERATION and an INCISION?
A laceration is jagged whereas an incision is smooth
What is the injury that separates various layers of soft tissue so they become detached or hang as a flap?
AVULSION; if possible, replace flap into original position unless contamination is present. NEVER NEVER NEVER remove skin flap
What is a PRIMARY BLAST INJURY?
Due entirely to the blast itself; damage to body is caused by pressure generated by explosion
