- Short and sharply focused
- Be clear and easy to understand

- Addresses and matches the organization’s scope of practice
- Inspires commitment
Components a mission statement addresses
- Target clientele (key market)
- What service is being provided (contribution)
- What makes the service unique (distinction)
Program Goals
The desired end products of a strength and conditioning program, stated in a broad, general manner
Program Objectives
Specific means of attaining program goals
Director of Strength and Conditioning
- Head strength and conditioning coach
- Responsible for the overall strength and conditioning program, facility, equipment, staff, and administrative tasks
- Responsible for developing, presenting, and enforcing the written policies and procedures of the staff and participants in the program
- Ensures staff are properly trained and prepared
Risk Management
The employment of strategies to decrease and control the risk of injury from athletic participation and therefore the risk of liability exposure
Informed Consent
- The process by which a procedure or activity is described to a participant
- An explanation of the inherent risks and benefits are provided, allowing the individual to determine if he or she desires to participate
Liability
A legal responsibility, duty, or obligation
Standard of Care
What a reasonable and prudent person would do under similar circumstances
Negligence
- Failure to act as a reasonable and prudent person would under similar circumstances
Elements that must exist in order for a professional to be found negligent
- Duty
- Breach of duty
- Proximate cause
- Damages
Process by which negligence may occur
- Professional must be found to have had a duty to act and have failed to act (a breach) with the appropriate standard of care
- Failure to act results in damages (physical or economic injury)
- Damage has to occur due to the natural and continuous sequence of reasonably foreseeable events (proximate cause)
Assumption of Risk
Knowing that an inherent risk exists with participation in an activity and voluntarily deciding to participate anyway
Scope of Practice
Proper legal parameters and professional duties
Statute of Limitations
The time during which individuals can file a lawsuit
Product Liability
Refers to the legal responsibilities of those who manufacture or sell products if a person sustains injury or damage as a result of using the product
Discipline for First Offense
- A verbal warning by a staff member
- Explanation of the nature and importance of the rule or guideline that was broken
- Reminder of disciplinary action for second offense
Discipline for Second Offense
- Dismissal from the facility for one day
- Documentation of the offense
- Correspondence with the athlete’s sport coach
- Reminder of the disciplinary action for third offense
Discipline for Third Offense
- Dismissal from the facility for one week
- Documentation of the offense
- Correspondence with the athlete’s sport coach
