Chapter 21: Thermal Imaging Camera Flashcards
Thermal Imaging
Detection of infrared radiation& translation of the detected energy into a view-able image
color scale
Hottest = white cooler = darker shades
3 types of emitters
Passive: absorb and dissipate (inanimate objects)
Active: Emit IR energy low to med strength (living stuff)
Direct: constant high strength emitters( hot water tank)
Infrared Radiation can be
Emitted: body heat
Absorbed: when you sit in a chair
Emitted again: when the chair emits after you leave
Reflected: mirror, glass, shiny surface,
Thermal Contrast
Visual difference between two or more items when viewed with TIC
Thermal Inversion
Happens when the temp of the environment changes and not the object even though the object changes shade
Thermal layering
high temp at ceiling and gradually drops as you scan towards the floor
MSA 5200 tic has 2 modes
normal mode: high sensitivity and low temp 0-302’F
Firefighting mode:low sensitivity and high temp up to 1040’F
3 keys of effective operation
Orientation
Interpretation
Communication
scan in a digital 2 starting from top to bottom and behind you
Infrared limitations
Glass, Water, Steam(depending on density)
TIC can be used to assist with
Size up,Search and rescue, Fire Attack, Ventilation, Overhaul, Haz mat, Wild land, Training, Water rescue, missing persons search
Zoome
hit green button
lights
Green = full batt.
Yellow= 15 min
red= less than 15 min
flashing red=60 sec or less
