CHAPTER 21: OCCLUSAL AND LOCALIZATION TECHNIQUES Flashcards
used to examine large areas of the maxilla or the mandible.
OCCLUSAL TECHNIQUE
Occlusal imaging can be used for the following purposes:
LOCATE RETAINED ROOTS
LOCATE SUPERNUMERY TEETH
LOCATE FOREIGN BODIES
EVALUATE LESIONS
EVALIATE FRACTURES
MEASURE AREA OF CLEFT PALATE
MEASURE CHANGES IN SIZE AND SHAPE OF MAXILLA OR MANDIBLE
Where is the receptor placed in the occlusal technique
placed with the tube side facing the arch that is being exposed.
For maxillary occlusal exposures, the patient’s head must be positioned with the maxillary arch ________ to the floor and the midsagittal (midline) plane _________ to the floor.
parallel
perpendiular
Three maxillary occlusal projections are commonly used:
- topograhic
- lateral
- pediatric
is used to examine the palate and the anterior teeth of the maxilla
maxillary topographic occlusal projection
size 4 (+65 degrees)
used to examine the palatal roots of molar teeth. It may also be used to locate foreign bodies or lesions in the posterior maxilla
lateral projection
size 4
+60 degrees
used to examine the anterior teeth of the maxilla and is recommended for use in children 5 years or younger
pediatric projection
size 2 (+60 degrees)
Three mandibular occlusal projections are commonly used:
- topographic
- cross-sectional
- pediatric
used to examine the anterior teeth of the mandible
mandibular topographic projection
size 4 (-55 degrees)
used to examine the buccal and lingual aspects of the mandible. It is also used to locate foreign bodies or salivary stones in the region of the floor of the mouth
cross sectional projection
size 4 (90 degrees)
is used to examine the anterior teeth of the mandible and is recommended for use in children 5 years or younger (
mandibular pediatric occlusal projection
size 2 (-55 degrees)
a method used to locate the position of a tooth or an object in the jaws
localization technique
Localization techniques can be used to obtain ___________ information.
3 dimensional
Localization techniques may be used to locate the following:
foreign bodies
impacted teeth
unerupted teeth
retained roots
jaw fractures
