Chapter 2: Shock Flashcards
What is Shock?
A life-threatening emergency that occurs when vial organs are starved of oxygen.
Is Shock reversible?
Yes but must be recognized and treated immediately at the hospital to prevent progression to irreversible organ damage.
When does Shocking occurs?
When there isn’t enough blood in the blood vessels, the blood pressure drops and too little oxygen circulated in the body.
How does the patient may appear during a Shock?
May appear pale, clammy and cold, lips and fingernails may turn cyanotic.

MI, CAD, arrhythmias and heart valve disorders.
What is Hemorrhagic?
Most common type of shock resulting from severe loos of blood.
What causes Hemorrhagic?
Traumatic injuries, internal bleeding and vaginal bleeding.
What is Septic?
Inflammation from sepsis causes tiny blood clots to form that block oxygen from reaching vital organs.
What does Septic causes?
Bacterial, viral or fungal infection.
What is the first step to support a patient in shock until emergency medical personnel arrive?
Assist the patient to lie on their back and rise the patient’s legs about 12in to ensure enough blood gets to the brain.
