Chapter 2: Hemorrhage Flashcards
What does the term Hemorrhage means?
The loss of blood from a blood vessel can be minor or profuse bleeding.
What are the 3 types of Bleeding?
Arterial, Venous and Capillary.
When does Arterial Bleeding occur?
When an artery is damaged.
Why Arterial Bleeding can be life-threatening and require immediate attention?
Because arteries carry high volumes of blood at high pressure.
Arterial Blood is bright red, “spots” from?
Pumping of the the heart and moving too quickly for clotting to occur.
When does Venous Bleeding occur?
When vein is damaged.
Veins carry high volumes of blood, do they supply the same pressure as arteries?
No.
Why is Venous Bleeding blood is darker in color?
Because it’s deoxygenated and venous bleeding moves slower than arterial bleeding.
When does Capillary Bleeding occurs?
When the small blood vessels that create the network between veins and arteries are damaged.
What does Capillary Bleeding produces?
Steady ooze from the wound area and often clots without first aid measures.
What is the treatment for all types of Hemorrhage?
Apply direct pressure to the site using a sterile dressing for up to twenty min depending on the type of bleed.
What needs to be assist with?
Cleaning, dressing and closing the wound once the bleeding has stopped.
