Chapter 2 Lecture 2 - Molecules, Chemical Bonds Flashcards
Molecule
2 or more atoms bonded.
Why are molecules formed (most of the time)
To fulfill the octet rule
Compound
Molecule with 2 or more elements
Chemical Bond
Any force that attracts one atom to another
Ionic Bond
Created through the gain and loss of electrons, attraction between an and cations
What is weaker, an ionic or covalent bond?
Ionic
Covalent Bond
Sharing of at least two electrons
Single Covalent Bond
Sharing 1 pair of electrons
Double Covalent Bond
2 pairs of electrons
Electronegativity
When electrons are not shared equally in a covalent bond
Does electronegativity occur with different or the same kind of atoms?
Different
How does electronegativity work?
When one atom is bigger than the other in a covalent bond, the bigger one gets the electrons for a longer amount of time because more protons = greater attraction to electrons, becomes more overall negative
Hydrogen Bond
slight attraction between positive H and negative O
Van der Waals forces
Weak, brief attractions between neutral atoms because the electron cloud of one atom gets very close to the nucleus of another
