Chapter 2: Elements of Design Flashcards
What are colours created with light called
additive colours
what are colours called that are created with pigments
subtractive colours
what are the primary colours of light
red green and blue
what are the three primary colours of pigments
red blue and yellow
what is colour hue
basic colour (think HSB)
what is colour value
the degree of lightness or darkness (lightness or brightness)
what is colour intensity or chroma
degree of purity of the hue (saturation?)
what is it called when you add white to a colour/hue
a tint
what is it called when black is added to a hue
a shade
what is it called when you add grey to a hue
a tone - it can also be created when you add a colour’s complement
what is the Brewster or Prang Colour System
the colour wheel
What is the Munsell colour system
defines colour more accurately than the brewster colour wheel and uses three scales or three dimensions
Kim look this up on google- not sure what it is
how do complementary colours affect each other when placed together
they reinforce each other. when seen adjacent to each other, each appears to heighten the other’s saturation
what happens when to non complementary colours are placed together
each colour appears to tint the other with it’s compmlement
what happens when two primary colours are seen together
each will appear to be tinted with the third primary colour
what happens when a colour is placed on a darker background & vise versa
it will appear lighter than it actually is if it’s on a dark background and vice versa- think when you hold paint up to a while wall it looks darker
what happens to neutral grey when you place it on a blue background or a red background
the grey appears warm wen on the blue background and appears cool when on the red background
What happens when you put a red object and a blue object under an incandescent light
it will appear more red and the blue will appear muddy and washed out
what are some general rules about colour psychology
that people group colours in to warm and cool colours
cool colours are restful and quiet and warm are stimulating and active
using only colour, how would you make an object look larger?
use a bright warm colour
using only colour how would you make an object appear heavier
make it dark
using only colour how would you make an object look smaller
using a dark colour
what is a tetrad colour scheme
using four colours that are equally spaced around the colour wheel
