Proximal
closer in to the center
ex: the humerus is proximal in comparison to the radius
Distal
farther away from the center
ex: the radius is distal in comparison to the humerus
Lateral
out to the side
ex: away from the bodies midline
Medial
toward the middle
ex: toward the bodies midline
Ventral/Antral/Anterior
the front
Dorsal/Posterior
the back
ex: think of the dorsal fin on a sharks back
Cranial
toward the top
ex: up toward the forehead
Caudal
toward the bottom
ex: down toward the spinal cord
Superior
above
ex: the head is superior to the feet
Inferior
below
ex: the legs are inferior to the body
Prone
lying down on belly
Supine
lying down on back
Contrateral
opposite side
ex: the brains right hemisphere controls the left hand while the brains left hemisphere controls the right hand
Ipsilateral
Same side
Unilateral
one side
Bilateral
both sides
Dorsum
the top of the hand or foot
Plantar
the sole of the foot
Palmar
the palm of the hand
Sagittal
Divides the body in slices right to left
ex: division down the bodies midline
Coronal
divides the body in slices front to back
Transverse
divides the body from top to bottom
