Chapter 2 Flashcards
Why are electrons important ?
They play a role in chemical bonding
What is a chemical bond?
A force that holds atoms together
How do chemical bonds arise?
As a result of gaining ,loosing or sharing electrons between atoms
What are the three types of chemical bonds?
Covalent bonds
Ionic bonds
Hydrogen bonds
What is a covalent bond?
The sharing of valence of electrons
What is a molecule?
Consists of two or more atoms held together by a covalent bond
What is a single and double bond?
A single bond is a sharing of one pair of valence electrons. A double bond is a sharing of two pairs of valence electrons.
How can covalent bonds be classified?
They can be classified by either being nonpolar or polar .The type of bond depends on the electronegativity of atoms involved
What is a nonpolar covalent bond?
The atoms have similar electron negativities, and electrons are shared equally
What is a polar covalent bond?
A polar covalent bond is a bond that forms between atoms in which one atom is more electronegative than the other. There is an unequal sharing of electrons.
What is electronegativity?
Electronegativity refers to the ability of an atom to pull a shared electron more towards itself. Electronegative atoms include oxygen and nitrogen electron activity increases from left to right and upwards
What is an ionic bond?
Ionic bond is a attraction between cat ions and an ions
What are ions?
Are atoms with more or fewer electrons than usual and are charged atoms
What is an anion?
An anion is a negatively charged ion
What is a cation?
A cation is a positively charged ion
