Chapter 17 Flashcards
The variety of organisms considered at all levels from populations to ecology.
Biodiversity
The science of grouping organisms according to their presumed natural relationships.
Taxonomy
The naming system we use today. It means two names. It was developed by Carolus Linnaeus.
Binomial Nomenclature
the study of when structures develop in the embryo.
Embryology
The evolutionary history of a species.
Phylogeny
The analysis of the evolutionary or ancesteral relationships among groups.
Phylogenetics
The Three Domains are
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukaryotic
Made up of small single-celled prokaryotic organisms.
Bacteria
Have distinctive cell membranes and other unique biochemical and genetic properties.
Archaea
Eukaryotic organisms. All organisms but bacteria
Eukarya
The Six Kingdom System are
Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae ,and Animalia
True bacteria.
Eubacteria
Bacteria-like organisms that live in very different environments.
Archaebacteria
Made up of eukaryotic organisms. They live in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Includes algae and protozoa.
Protista
Made up of heterotrophic unicellular and multicellular eukaryotic organisms. Includes mushrooms, yeasts, puffballs, rusts, and bread molds.
Fungi
