What is warmth? What is the scale?
Responsiveness and affection displayed by parent
- Scale goes from hostile/unresponsive to warm
What is control? What is the scale?
Amount of regulation and supervision given.
- Scale goes from low control to high control
What do warm parents look like? (4pts)
What are the consequences of warmth? (3pts)
- responsive, smile at, praise, encourage
Consequences:
- a difference in self-esteem
- better communication- not going to be scared to speak up
- willingness to try new things (feel more confident to try new things and push themselves)
What do hostile parents look like? (4pts)
- unresponsive, quick to criticize, punish, belittle without truly trying to understand things
What do controlling parents look like? (3pts)
What is a benefit? (1pt)
- limit children
-place demands on them - monitor children to ensure compliance
Consequences:
- kids thrive with a routine and structure and clear expectations/rules that are age appropriate
What do un-controlling parents look like? (2pts)

- not restrictive, few demands
Consequences:
- Child may try to take control and become anxious and pressured which can create anxiety
- If not limited control they can start to defy authority

high level of warm and control
What is permissive parenting?
- High warmth and low control
What is uninvolved parenting?
- low warmth and low control
What is authoritarian parenting?
- high control, low warmth/control without warmth
What are the characteristics of authoritarian parenting? (4pts)
Characteristics:
- Demanding, restrictive
- expect strict obedience
- use punitive means to assure compliance
- little explanation, little give-and-take
What are some consequences of authoritarian parenting? (2pts)
- child can become anxious/timid or more defiant
- low control for themselves can lead to issues with decision making
What are the characteristics of authoritative parenting? (6pts)
- discipline in warm, supportive environnement
- firm control
- expect mature behaviour-depending on where they are at developmentally and cognitively
- explain standards and rules
- encourage children’s input
- listen to child and provide with structure
What are some consequences/challenges with authoritative parenting? (3pts)
- Can come across as patronizing to the child
- its a lot of work
- some kids may have different needs (some kids may be more defiant/determined, special needs etc)
What are the characteristics of permissive parenting? (4pts)
- Responsive, warm, undemanding
- nurturing, accepting
- avoid imposing control
- allow children to regulate own behaviour, make own decisions
