Chapter 14 vocab Flashcards
rock
a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals of organic matter
erosion
the process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another
composition
the chemical makeup of a rock; describes either the minerals or other materials in the rock
deposition
the process in which material is laid down
texture
the quality of a rock that is based on the sizes, shapes, and positions of the rock’s grains
sedimentary rock
formed when mineral fragments, called clasts, are cemented together.
igneous rock
forms when hot liquid rock(magma) cools and solidifies.
cementation
the process when minerals are squeezed together due to the intense pressures
metamorphic rock
formed when rock is trapped underneath the earth’s surface. Here it changes composition due to the intense pressures and extreme temperatures.
magma
hot, liquid rock
rock cycle
the series of processes in which a rock forms, changes from one type to another, is destroyed, and forms again by geological processes.
