Chapter 14 Pharm Flashcards
- What is Culture and Sensitivity?
A culture is a test to find germs (such as bacteria or a fungus) that can cause an infection. A sensitivity test checks to see what kind of medicine, such as an antibiotic, will work best to treat the illness or infection.
- What is MIC?
(Minimum Inhibitory concentration) lowest concentration of antimicrobial that prevents visible growth.
- What is MBC?
(Minimum Bactericidal concentration) lowest concentration of antimicrobial agent that prevents growth of an organism after 24 hours.
- What is Bacteriostatic?
Drug that inhibits grow but don’t kill bacteria
- What is Bacteriocidal?
Drug that kills bacteria
- What is Time dependent response?
Kill rate influence by the time of drug concentration above MIC
- What is concentration dependent response?
Kill rate increases proportional with drug concentration.
- What is Pencillins?
Several different classes, natural and synthetic.
- Pencillins are bactericidal what?
Pencillins are bactericidal, demonstrate time-dependent killing and can act synergistically with aminoglycosides against some bacteria.
- What is common side effect of Pencillins?
Hypersensitivity
- What is Penicillin names usually end in ?”
LIN
- What is Penicillinase-resistant Penicillins?
- Active against gram-positive cocci (Staph and Strep)
2. Routinely used in skin and Soft tissue infections.
- What is Cephalosporins presently?
4th generation have extended gram positive and negative coverage.
