Teams
is a unit of two or more people who interact
and coordinate their work to accomplish a common goal
Virtual team
a group made up of geographically or organizationally dispersed
members who are linked primarily through
advanced information and telecommunications
technologies
Free riding
team members who attain benefits but do not actively contribute
Task specialist role
spend time and energy helping the team reach its goals (giving opinions, intiating ideas)
Socioemotional role
support team members’ emotional needs and help strengthen the social entity
Three primary types and size of teams
1) Functional Team: a manager and his or her
subordinates in the formal chain of command
2) Cross-functional team: employees from about the same hierarchical level but different areas of
expertise
3) Special purpose team: created outside formal
organization structure to undertake a project
Work Team Effectiveness
1) Productive output: performance and the quality and quantity of task outputs
2) Personal satisfaction: the team’s ability to meet the personal needs of its members
3) The capacity to adapt and learn: the ability of teams to bring greater knowledge and skills to job tasks
What are the 5 stages of team development?
1) forming - getting acquainted
2) storming - individual personalities emerge
3) norming - conflict resolved, team harmony
4) performing - emphasis on problem solving, accomplishing tasks
5) adjourning - emphasis on wrapping up and gearing down

1) Separate the people from the problem
