Chapter 14 Flashcards
All somatic motor neurons release what?
acetylcholine
Somatic nervous system effect
stimulatory
ANS
preganglionic fibers release ACh, postganglionic fibers release norepinephrine or ACh at effectors, effect is either stimulatory or inhibitory, depending on type of receptors
Parasympathetic
promotes maintenance functions, conserves energy
Sympathetic
mobilizes body during activity
Role of parasympathetic
“rest and digest”
- blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rates are low
- gastrointestinal tract activity is high
- pupils constricted
Role of sympathetic
“fight or flight”
-increased heart rate, dry mouth, cold, sweaty skin, dilated pupils
Vagus nerve
account for 90% of all preganglionic parasympathetic fibers in body
Cardiac plexus
slow heart rate
Pulmonary plexus
serve lungs and bronchi
Esophageal plexus
form anterior and posterior vagal trunks that sends branches to stomach liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, and part of large intestine
Cholinergic receptors
nicotinic and muscarinic receptors
