Personality
A pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that is unique to each individual, and remains relatively consistent over time.
ideographic approach
the process of “figuring yourself out”
nomothetic approach
examines personalities in large groups of people, with the aim of making generalizations about personality structures.

personality trait
describes a persons habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving; how the person is most of the time.
the Barnum effect
Barnum gave participants a personality test and then generated a description of the subjects personalities . everybody received the same description, but were convinced it was an accurate portrayal
factor analysis
used in group items that people respond to similarly
the five factor model history
- Raymond cattle narrowed list of key personality traits to 16
- McCrae and Costa created the five factor model
the five factor model
a trait based theory of personality based on the finding that personality can be described using five major dimensions
- openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism
HEXACO model of personality
a six factor theory that generally replicates the five factors of the FFM and adds one additional: honesty
the dark triad
refers to the three traits: Machiavellians, psychopathy, narcissism. refers to someone who will be more likely to commit harm in general.
right wing Authoritarianism
a highly problematic set of personality characteristics that involve three key tendencies.
- obeying orders and differing to established authorities
- supporting aggression against those who differ from the social norm
- believe in maintaining current social order
personality traits over time
- genetics influence some traits
- infants posses different temperaments
- personalities become more fixed the older we get
state
a temporary or psychological engagement that influences behaviour

- association (with friends)
- activities( rushed)
- subjective states (mad)
Reciprocal determination
behaviours, internal factors and external factors interact to determine one another, and that our personalities are based on interactions among these three aspects.
