Chapter 12-Shock Flashcards
Define shock
A state of collapse or failure of the cardiovascular system, which ultimately leads to cessation of blood flow
What are some causes of shock?
Heart attack, motor vehicle accident, allergic reaction, gunshot wound
Perfusion depends on three things:
Well-functioning heart, adequately sized vessels, appropriate blood volume
As you approach a scene, you should:
Put on gloves, call law enforcement if violence was involved, look for clues to MOI/NOI, be alert to hazards to your safety
______ pulse is an early sign of shock, while _____is a sign that shock is progressing to a lethal stage
rapid, hypoperfusion
What type of skin is associated with shock?
Cool/clammy
How often should you reassess vitals if patient is unstable? Stable?
5 min, 10-15 min
When you reassess, what should you focus your assessment on?
ABCs, chief complaint, mental status, interventions
How should you treat shock?
Stop all external bleeding
keep supine
Spinal immobilization
supplemental O2 or positive pressure ventilation
Cover patient with blankets
transport quickly (within 60 min of incident)
Don’t let patient eat or drink
What are the seven types of shock?
Cardiogenic Obstructive Septic Neurogenic Anaphylactic Psychogenic Hypovolemic
What are some causes of cardiogenic shock?
Inadequate heart function
Disease of muscle tissue
Impaired electrical system
disease/injury
What are some causes of obstructive shock?
Mechanical obstruction of heart muscles:
- Pneumothorax
- Cardioac tamponade
- Pulmonary embolism
What causes septic shock?
Bacterial infection
What causes neurogenic shock?
Damage to the cervical spine, causing widespread dilation of blood vessels
What causes anaphylactic shock?
Extreme allergic reaction
