Chapter 12 - Section 3 Flashcards
How is the eukaryotic cell cycle regulated?
By a molecular control system
how is the cell cycle generally driven?
by specific chemical signals that are present in the cytoplasm
how is the cell cycle control system regulated
by internal and external controls
What does the G1 checkpoint do?
determines whether the cell recieves the go ahead to complete the rest of the process, or it will go into a nondividing phase called the G0 phase.
cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases
these are two types of regulatory proteins
MPF (Maturation-promoting factor)
a cyclin cdk complex that triggers a cells passage past the G2 checkpoint into the M phase.
density dependent inhibition
an external signal in which crowded cells stop dividing.
anchorage dependence
cells must be attached to a substratum in order to divide
transformation
the process by which a normal cell is converted to a cancerous cell
benign tumor
masses of abnormal cells remain only at the original site
