Leaders
Definition:
- Leaders are one who obtains followers and influences them in setting and achieving objectives
Formal leader
- Leaders who are usually a manager
- Recognised as one with position and title that reflect their status
Informal leader
- One who exhibits many characteristics of the formal leader
- Not recognised by the organisation and holds no title or authority
Autocratic Style
Definition
- Classical leadership style where leaders will have complete authority over the organisation
- Does not involve others in decision making process in which leaders only focus on one way communication
- Employees are directed to implement the leaders’ decision.
Autocratic Style
Effectiveness
Effective when:
- New, untrained staff
- Limited time to make decision (Urgent)
- A manager’s power challenged by staff
Ineffective when:
- Staff become tense, fearful or resentful
- Staff expect their opinions heard (be careful of union strike)
- Low staff morale, high turnover and absenteeism
Participative Style
Definition
- Employees are involved in planning and decision making process
- Based on ideas and feedback from staff
Participative Style
Effective
Effective when:
- Wants staff to share in decision-making and problem solving duties - Wants to provide opportunities for staff to develop a high sense of personal growth and job satisfaction
Ineffective when:
- Not enough time to get everyone's input - Can't afford mistakes
Situational Style
- Modify their management behaviour based on the maturity level of subordinates
Hersey and Blanchard Leadership Style:
Directing/ Telling
Leader will tell follower what to do and how to do it
Hersey and Blanchard Leadership Style:
Coaching/ Selling
Leader will still give direction and information but focus more on communicating with the follower
Leader will sell their message to get the people on board
Hersey and Blanchard Leadership Style:
Supporting/ Participating
Leader will focus more on relationship and less on direction
Leader will work with the team and share more decision making responsibilities.
Improve motivation and confidence
Hersey and Blanchard Leadership Style:
Delegating
Leader passes on most of the responsibilities onto the follower
Leader would still monitor the progress but they’re less involved in decision making
Leadership Traits:
Socially Aware
Listen intently and pick up empathetically on unspoken and intuitive signs from others
More effective communication and connection with others
Win trust of employees
Leadership Traits:
Self Discipline
Well organised, strong will power and determination in everything they do
Have clear objectives and are able to influence others
Gain respect from them
Leadership Traits:
Take Responsibility
Own up to themselves and their actions even if the fault were the ones of the subordinates
Failed to communicate clearly or to match the right man with the right job
