Oral contraception
Contraceptive pill. Contains hormones to inhibit FSH production = eggs don’t mature.
PROS: 99% effective Reduces risk of some cancers CONS: Side effects eg. Nausea
Progesterone
Injection, implant or skin implant.
Slow release to stop eggs maturing and being released.
PROS:
Doesn’t need to be taken daily, less likely to be forgotten
CONS:
Less effective than the pill
Barrier method
Condom, diaphragm.
Prevents sperm reaching the egg.
PROS: 98% effective (when used effectively) Prevents STIs CONS: Can break/be used incorrectly
Spermicide
Kills or disables sperm.
PROS:
Increases effectiveness of some barriers
CONS:
Can’t be used on its own
Sterilisation
Undergoing surgery.
PROS: Permanently stops pregnancy CONS: Risks from surgery Expensive to reverse
IUD
Implant into the uterus. Prevents fertilised eggs implanting into the wall or release hormones.
PROS:
Long lasting but can be reversed
CONS:
Small risk of infection or uterus damage when IUD is implanted
