Chapter 10 Flashcards
Homeostasis
Regulating internal conditions to keep them at an optimum, despite changes - for enzymes.
Negative feedback
Changes are reversed and returned back to the optimum level.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain and Spinal cord. Coordinates response of effectors.
Reflex action
Fast, automatic reaction.
Coordination centre
Receives and processes information.
Synapse
The gap between two neurons.
THE REFLEX ARC
Stimulus - Receptor - Sensory neuron - Relay neuron - Motor neuron - Effector - Response.
THE REFLEX ARC -
1) STIMULUS
Change in the environment
THE REFLEX ARC -
2) RECEPTOR
Detects a stimulus
THE REFLEX ARC -
3) SENSORY NEURON
Transmits to the CNS
THE REFLEX ARC -
4) RELAY NEURON
Spinal cord
From the sensory to the motor neuron
THE REFLEX ARC -
5) MOTOR NEURON
From CNS to effector
THE REFLEX ARC -
6) EFFECTOR
Muscle or gland response
THE REFLEX ARC -
7) RESPONSE
Change in response to the stimulus.
The Synapse
An electrical impulse arrives at Synapse.
Neurotransmitter molecules are released and diffuse across Synapse.
Neurotransmitter molecules fill receptors. Cause an electrical impulse in the next neuron.
