Chapter 11 Flashcards
Endocrine system
The system of glands that secrete hormones.
Hormone
Chemical secreted by a gland travels in the blood. Slower and longer lasting.
Pituitary gland
Secretes several hormones.
Growth hormone.
Testes - testosterone
Male hormone.
Stimulates sperm production.
Adrenal gland - adrenaline
Hormone produced by the adrenal gland.
Times of fear/stress.
Increases heart rate and boosts the delivery of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles.
Thyroid gland - thyroxin
Hormone produces by thyroid gland.
Stimulates the metabolic rate.
Growth and development.
BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROL -
PANCREAS
Monitors and controls blood glucose concentration.
BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROL -
INSULIN
Hormone produced when blood glucose concentration is too high.
Glucose moves from the blood into the cells.
Liver and muscle cells excess glucose is converted to GLYCOGEN.
BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROL -
GLUCAGON
Hormone produced when blood glucose concentration is too low.
Glycogen is converted into glucose and released into the blood.
BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROL -
GLYCOGEN
Storage molecule made from glucose molecules bonded together.
Liver and muscle.
BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROL -
TYPE 1 DIABETES
Pancreas fails to produce enough insulin.
Insulin injections.
BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROL -
TYPE 2 DIABETES
No longer respond to the insulin produced by the pancreas.
Carbohydrate controlled diet and exercise.
Obesity is a risk factor.
