What is nonverbal communication?
Process of conveying a message without the use of words.
Can include gestures, expressions, tone of voice, posture, etc
What is an illustrator?
Gesture to communicate message effectively and reinforce points.
What is an emblem?
Another nonverbal gesture.
I.E. the “ok” hand sign.
What is a regulator?
Nonverbal messages which control, maintain, or discourage interaction.
I.E. holding up hand to stop someone from speaking.
What are affect displays?
Nonverbal communication that expresses emotions or feelings.
What are adaptors?
nonverbal communication that helps adapt to the environment and context to make you feel comfortable
What is a self-adaptor?
You meeting your need for security.
I.E. Playing with hair or fingers
What is an object-adaptor?
Using an object in a way it was not designed. Generally, displays a lack of engagement in the speech.
What can intentional nonverbal communication do?
Replace, mask, or contradict what we say.
I.E. just nodding your head instead of saying yes, or shaking it to say no
What is masking?
Substituting more appropriate displays for less appropriate displays.

What is space in nonverbal communication?
Space between objects and people. Often associated with social rank.
What are proxemics?
Study of human use of space and distance in communication.
What is territory?
Related to control. It means the space you claim as your own and are willing to defend.
What is personal space?
Bubble of space surrounding each individual.
What is time in nonverbal communication?
How aware of time you are, and even social status (You choose to wait for few people). Honor time expectations associated with your speech.
What is Chronemics?
Study of how we refer to and perceive time.
What is Kinesics?
Study of body movement, which is key to nonverbal communication
What are haptics?
Touch in communication interaction.
What is Functional-Professional Touch?
Medical examinations and physical therapy type of situations.
What is social-polite touch?
Handshakes
What is Friendship-Warmth Touch?
Hugs
What is Love-Intimacy Touch?
Kiss between family or romantic partners?
What is Sexual-Arousal Touch?
Sexual Caressing or intercourse.
What is Paralanguage?
Verbal and nonverbal aspects of speech that can influence meaning.
Examples include tone, intensity, and pauses.
What is a pregnant pause?
Silence between verbal messages that has a lot of meanings
What is an Artifact?
Forms of decorative ornamentation that are chosen to represent self-concept
What is environment?
Physical and psychological aspects of the communication context.
What is the speakers triangle?
Speaker starts in position 1 for introduction, position 2 for first point, position 3 for 2nd point, and back to the original spot for final point and conclusion.
What is an anticipation step?
Slightly raising hand (waist high maybe) when leading up to the main piont.
What is an implementation step?
Using arms and hands above waist to complement the spoken word.
What is the relaxation step?
Letting go motion complements residual message and concludes the motion.
What are facial gestures?
using face to display feelings and attitudes nonverbally.
