What is a stereotype?
beliefs about people based on category membership
What is prejudice?
perceptions, feeling, ATTITUDES about people
What is discrimination?
differential BEHAVIOR toward people
What is social categorization?
grouping people based on common attributes, allows us to speed up social membership.
What is the social identity theory?
favoring in groups over out groups
What is the out group homogeneity?
similarity amongst out group members
What is the illusory correlation?
a false impression that two variables correlate
What is the ultimate attribution error?
like the fundamental attribution error but the attributions are about a group.
What is belief in a just world?
a belief that people get what they deserve
What is the confirmation bias?
start out with belief, find confirming evidence that supports it.
What is the realistic conflict theory?
limited resources leads to conflict between groups which cause prejudice, discrimination.
What is relative deprivation?
discontent with the belief that one fairs poorly compared to others.
What is the contact hypothesis?
encouraging contact between groups decreases prejudice.
What are the 6 conditions for the C.H. to be met?
mutual interdependence, a common goal, equal status, informal, interpersonal contact, multiple contacts, social norms of equality
What is the stereotype threat?
anxiety experienced by members of a stereotyped group that their behavior might confirm the stereotype
