what are emotions?
immediate, specific negative or positive responses to environmental events or internal thoughts
what are moods?
long-lasting emotional states; influence thought and behavior over longer periods of time
what are primary and secondary emotions?
Paul Ekman
anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness
secondary emotions are mixes of primary emotions (like color wheel)
what is the circumplex model?
valence - positive and negative
arousal - physiological response
insula
awareness of emotions
amygdala
emotional significance of stimuli and helps generate immediate reactions (arousal)
what is the James-Lange Theory?
how we interpret a situation determines what we feel
people perceive their body responding, and as a result of the body change, they feel an emotion
what is the Cannon-Bard Theory?
our mind and body respond independently during emotional states
info is sent to the brain and body separately
what is the Schachter-Singer 2 Factor Theory
a label is applied to physiological arousal and results in the experience of an emotion
what is the misattribution of arousal?
when people misidentify the source of their arousal
what does guilt do?
helps strengthen social bonds
why do we get embarassed?
violation of a norm, mess up, or threaten our self image
what is thought suppression?
attempting to not respond or feel an emotion
what is rumination?
thinking about, elaborating on, and focusing on undesired thoughts or feelings
