Chapter 10 - Blood Vessels and Blood Flashcards
arteries
transport blood away from heart and branch into smaller vessels, forming arterioles
arterioles
distribute blood to capillary beds, the sites of exchange with the body tissues
capillary
microscopic channel that supplies blood to the tissues themselves (perfusion)
venules
small veins that converge into larger veins
vein
blood vessel that conduct blood toward the heart
brachial artery
large artery in upper arm near bicep
sphygmomanometer
blood pressure cuff attached to a measure device
systolic pressure
arterial pressure resulting from ejection of blood during ventricular contraction or sysole
diastolic pressure
arterial pressure of blood during ventricular relaxation
cardiac output
measurement of blood flow from heart through the ventricles and usually measure in liters per minute
hemopoiesis
process by which the body produces blood
diapedesis
migration of blood cells through the intact walls of blood vessels into the surrounding tissue
arterioscleosis
generalized loss of compliance or hardening of arteries
atheroscleorsis
buildup of plaque in the walls of a vessel
hypovolemic shock
caused by hemorrhage
