What is the accepted meaning of power in this course?
The capacity of a person, team, or organization to influence others
-based on the target’s perception that the powerholder controls a valuable resource, requires a certain level of trust, and a certain level of dependence
What are the sources of power?
Legitimate, Expert, reward, coercive (can apply punishment), referent (respect to powerholder, charism related)
What are the contingencies of power?
Nonsubstitutability, centrality ( interdependence to power holder), visibility (social interaction, power symbol, known that you control a valued resource), discretion (rules limit the ability to freely exercise judgment
Explain Legitimate Power
Agreement that people in specific positions can request behaviors from others, usually an aspect of information control
uses the bases of ‘norm of reciprocity: Obligation to reciprocate favours
Explain Expert Power
Capacity to influence others by possessing knowledge or skills that they value
They can gain power by how they react to/predict/prevent environmental changes
What is Deference to Power?
Human tendencies to mindlessly follow charism, or people who claim to be experts or claim to have legitimate power
They have referent power
What is the power contingency of nonsubstitutablity?
The employee is unique and valuable, control certain level of resource control and differentiation.

Social network (interdependence, drive to bond), Social capital (knowledge and opportunity)

A: feeling empowered, high motivation, less mindful thinking, perceived power over themselves
B: power over others, produces senses of duty, more empathy and midfulness

Silent authority (presence influences behaviors, legitimate power)

Upward appeal, relying on higher authority support
