Chapter 1 Flashcards
The Science of the Mind
Cognitive Psychology
Science of memorial processes such as acquisition, retention, and the use of knowledge. Basic research.
Clinical Psychology
Practice of science such as treating psychological disorders, alleviating disorders, and personal dream-meaning. Applied research.
Introspection
The process through which one looks within to observe and record the contents of one’s own mental life.
Behaviorism
How behavior changes in response to different configurations of stimuli. This theory tried to avoid mental processes.
Amnesia
Where someone has had brain damage and has lost the ability to remember certain materials.
Transcendental Method
By Immanuel Kant, investigator first observes the effects of a process and then asks what the process was to bring about these affects.
Working Memory
Memory used for information that I am actively working on. It is easily accessible when needed.
Span Test
Read 1-4 letters or numbers to see how accurate their working memory is.
Working-Memory System
System of mental resources used for holding information in an easily accessible form. 3 types of this system.
Central Executive
Director of the working-memory system. It is needed for interpretation or analysis.
Visuospatial Buffer
Low-level assistant of the working-memory system that is used for storing visual or spatial representations.
Articulatory Rehearsal Loop
Low-level assistant of the working-memory system that draws on subvocalized speech, which serves to create a record in the phonological buffer.
Subvocalization
Silent speech, repeating the letters or numbers to yourself (used in span test).
Phonological Buffer
An auditory image created in the inner ear.
Concurrent Articulation Task
A requirement that a research participant speak or mime speech while doing some other task. This occupies muscles used for speech that is used for subvocalization.
