The terms for morals, ethics, duties, supererogatories, and values; what behaviors might be subject to moral/ethical judgments.
What’s the difference between ethical issues and ethical dilemmas?
Ethical issues are moral questions or problems, while ethical dilemmas are situations where two or more ethical choices conflict with each other.
What do ethical issues come into play with?
They often concern the government’s social control mechanisms and the impact on those governed.
What do ethical dilemmas involve?
Two choices. Either the choice is unclear or the right choice will be difficult because of the
costs involved.
What do legislators do?
They make laws and determine punishment.
What does the police do?
Enforce laws.
What do attorneys and judges do?
Affect the justice process.
What do correctional professionals do?
Affect the offenders’ lives.
What is discretion in criminal justice?
Allows officers to quickly judge a situation, determine what is going on, identify the legal statute that pertains to the case, and interpret that statute (law).
Morals and morality refer to…?
What is judged as good conduct.
Ethics refers to…?
The study and analysis of what constitutes good or bad conduct.
What are duties?
Actions that an individual must perform in order to be considered moral.
What is supererogatories?
Actions that are commendable but not required.
What are imperfect duties?
General duties that one should uphold, but without specific application as to when or how.
What are values?
Elements of desirability, worth, or importance. Individual values form value systems.
What are the four elements in consideration for decisions that are judged either ethically or unethically?
- Acts (rather than beliefs).
- Only human acts.
- Free will.
- Affects others.
