Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is an abnormal mass of tissue?
A tumor
In biological standards how is cancer caused
It is caused by the production of too many cells
What are the two classifications of tumors?
A benign and a malignant tumor
Is a malignant tumor cancerous or non cancerous? Why?
A malignant tumor is cancerous because it invades to surrounding tissue and spreads
What are the cells that line the outer surface of the body? and how are they separated from the rest of the body?
Epithelial Cells and they are separated by the basal membrane
What are the 3 embryotic germ layers?
Ectoderm
Mesoderm
Endoderm
What embryotic layer will develop into the epidermis of the skin?
The Ectoderm
What embryotic layer will develop into the dermis of the skin, bone, cartilage, fat, muscles, blood and is classified as supporting tissue?
The Mesoderm
What embryotic layer will develop into the epithelial lining of the digestive tract, respiratory system, and urogenital system?
The Endoderm
What are the three types of cancer classifications?
- Carcinomas
- Sarcomas
- Blood Cancers
What are the tissue growths that are non cancerous?
- Hypertrophy
2. Hyperplasia
Can you explain Hypertrophy vs Hyperplasia?
Both have normal cellular organization but hypertrophy has an increase in cell size while hyperplasia has an increase in cell number
What tissue growths are considered cancerous?
- Dysplasia
2. Neoplasia
Can you explain Dysplasia and Neoplasia
Both have disorganized growth which is a warning sign of cancer. Neoplasia has a net increase in the number of dividing cells.
