I -am learning- to drive.
-Estoy aprendiendo- a manejar.
Use the present progressive to talk about an action that is continuing into the present.
I -am bringing- the apples in my bag. (use the simple present)
-Traigo- las manzanas en la bolsa.
Spanish does not use the present progressive nearly as often as English did. Most of the time, the simple present tense is used where English would use the present progressive.
Yesterday, Pedro -was searching- for some documents.
Ayer, Pedro -estuvo buscando- algunos documentos.
Like English, Spanish has a progressive tense for each simple tense. Simply use the appropriate conjugation of estar in the corresponding simple tense, and add the present participle.
He/she -is still working- for the same Chilean company.
-Sigue trabajando- para la misma compañia chilena.
Seguir can be used instead of estar with verbs of motion. In this case, the construction emphasizes the continuation.
I -am looking- for a job (with andar)
-Ando buscando- trabajo.
Andar can be used in place of estar with verbs of motion.
They -are going around saying- we are a couple.
-Van diciendo- que somos una pareja.
Ir + present participle can be used to translate “to go (around) + present participle”
They -come walking-.
-Vienen caminando-.
Venir + present participle can be used to translate “to come” + present participle.
-Swaying- its tail, the cat sat down on the sofa.
-Meneando- su cola, el gato se sentó en el sofá.
Present participles can be used in phrases just as in English.
The guests, -waiting- patiently in line, talk about the weather.
Los huéspedes, -esperando- pacientemente en la fila, hablan del tiempo.
Present participles can be used in phrases just as in English.
-Dancing- is fun.
-Bailar- es divertido.
Unlike English, the present participle may NOT function as a noun. The infinitive is used instead.
-After having breakfast-, he/she was running around the neighborhood.
-Después de desayunar-, ya estaba corriendo por el barrio.
In Spanish, the present participle must not immediately follow a preposition. Use the infinitive instead.
-Upon hearing- the phone ring, they got up.
-Al escuchar- sonar el teléfono, se levantaron.
Use “al” + infinitive to translate “upon/on” + present participle.
