aboriginal and torres strait islander peoples
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples- One way to refer collectively to First nations Australians (Indigenous Australians), inclusive of the wide range of nations, cultures and languages across mainland Australia and throughout the Torres Strait.
anxiety
Anxiety- The emotional state we feel when we anticipate threat or danger, causing feelings of fear, worry or dread or uneasiness; the threat may be specific or ambiguous.
external factors
External Factors- Influences on our mental wellbeing that come from biological and social sources outside of ourselves, in the physical and social environments.
internal factors
Internal Factors- Influences on our wellbeing that come from biological and psychological sources within ourselves, including genetic, acquired and learned factors.
levels of functioning
Levels of Functioning- The different degrees to which a person is able to engage effectively in the domains of life, such as in personal care, relationships and work.
mental wellbeing
Mental Wellbeing- A multidimensional construct that includes emotional, psychological and social wellbeing; it is experienced along a continuum from languishing to flourishing.
multidimensional framework
Multidimensional Framework- A conceptual structure (i.e. framework) that defines the roles of multiple intersecting factors that contribute to an experience. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander framework of social and emotional wellbeing is an example. Western understandings of mental wellbeing also consider multiple dimensions.
phobia
Phobia- A persistent, irrational and intense fear of a specific object, activity or situation.
resilience
Resilience- A persons ability to respond adaptively to stressful life events and cope with uncertainty, influenced by coping strategies, adaptive ways of thinking and social connectedness.
social and emotional wellbeing
Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB)- A holistic model of the determinants of health, including mental health, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, it considers the influence of a persons connections to the seven domains of body and behaviours, mind and emotions; family and kin; community; culture; Country; and spirituality and ancestry.
specific phobia
Specific Phobia- A kind of anxiety disorder in which a person experiences intense fear or anxiety towards a particular object or situation; the response is persistent, overwhelming and out of proportion to the actual threat.
