chap 7 key terms Flashcards
advanced sleep phase disorder (ASPD)
Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder (ASPD)- A circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by a sleep pattern that is significantly earlier (by at least two hours) than a conventional or socially desirable sleep pattern, resulting in evening sleepiness and early-morning insomnia (inability to sleep); also known as advanced sleep phase syndrome; may lead to impairments in social and/or occupational functioning; more common in the elderly.
affective functioning
Affective functioning- The aspect of a persons behavioural responses that relate to the display and control of emotions and feelings.
blood alcohol concentration
Blood alcohol concentration (BAC)- The amount of alcohol present in the bloodstream.
bright light therapy
Bright light therapy- A treatment for circadian rhythm phase disorders that exposes people to intense but safe amounts of artificial light for a specific and regular length of time to help synchronise their sleep-wake cycle with a normal external day-night cycle.
circadian rhythm sleep disorder
Circadian rhythm sleep disorder- Any sleep disorder caused by a mismatch between a persons internal circadian rhythm and their actual or required sleep schedule; includes jet lag, shift work sleep disorder, advanced sleep phase disorder and delayed sleep phase disorder; referred to in DSM-TR-5TM as circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder.
delayed sleep phase syndrome
Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS)- A circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by a sleep pattern that is significantly later (by at least 2 hours) than conventional sleep patterns; resulting in later sleep onset and wake times; causing impaired alertness and performance during the day; common in adolescence; also referred to as delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD) or delayed sleep-wake phase sleep disorder.
microsleeps
Microsleeps- Episodes of sleep lasting only a few seconds that are not detected by the brain, posing danger in situations like driving; characterised by momentary lack of awareness, sudden waking due to head falling forwards or body jerks; occurs because of sleep deprivation.
partial sleep deprivation
Partial sleep deprivation- Getting some sleep in a 24-hour period but less than normally required for optimal daytime functioning.
REM rebound
REM rebound- A natural compensatory process that occurs after being deprived of REM sleep or after periods of stress in which a person experiences increased frequency, depth and intensity of the REM stage of sleep.
shift work
Shift work- Hours of paid employment that are outside the period of a normal working day and may follow a different pattern in consecutive period of weeks.
shift work disorder
Shift work disorder- A circadian rhythm sleep disorder caused by a persons work hours being schedules during the normal sleep period (at night), causing their circadian rhythms to be out of step with their work patterns.
sleep debt
Sleep debt- The amount of sleep loss accumulated from an inadequate amount of sleep, regardless of the cause.
sleep deprivation
Sleep deprivation- The condition of having had sufficient sleep to support optimal daytime functioning.
sleep-deprivation psychosis
Sleep-deprivation psychosis- A disruption of mental and emotional functioning as a result of lack of sleep.
sleep disorder
Sleep disorder- A persistent disturbance of typical sleep patterns (including the amount, quality and timing of sleep) or the chronic occurrence of abnormal events or behaviour during sleep.
