Chap 3: An Intro to Protein Structure and Function Flashcards
Amino acids are the
building blocks of proteins
Amino acids contain
Amine and carboxylic acid function groups
Zwitterion
A molecule that possesses both a positive and negative charge
Ex. an amino acid at neutral pH
Animo Acid Classification: Nonpolar (hydrophobic)
Usually an alkyl group , an aromatic ring, or hydrogen
C-H bonds (Lipids)
Animo Acid Classification: Polar
Side chain is polar or ionic
O-H bonds
Amino acids roles in biochemistry
- Lipid metabolism
- Amino acid metabolism
- Neurotransmission
Peptide Bond (definition)
the linkage between two amino acids
Peptide bond
An amide linkage between the carboxyl group of amino acid and the amino group
(water molecule is removed in order for an amide bond to form)
Types of peptides bonds
Dipeptides (2 amino acids)
Oligopeptides (4-20 amino acids)
Polypeptides (20 or more)
Monomers
Single chains of amino acids folded into an active protein
Multimers
Consists of several subunits;
Subunits labeled based on function (i.e. catalytic and regulatory)
Cofactors
nonprotein groups required for protein binding or activity
*can be divided into two categories minerals and vitamins
Kinases
enzymes that catalyze phosphorylation reactions
- ATP typically source of phosphate
Four levels of protein structure
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
Quaternary
Primary Structure
Linear arrangement
amino is the beginning and carboxyl is last
Held together by peptide bonds
