Chap-20 Bone metabolism Flashcards
What are bones made up of?
Mineralized ( calcium salts ) and Non-mineralized osteoid matrix
What happens to women at menopause?
Progesterone decreases which causes an increase in bone resorbtion
What classifies osteoporosis ?
When bone has abnormal mineralization / remodeling
What classifies osteopenia?
When your x-ray results show signs of bone loss due to osteoid (matrix non collagen non mineral) being low
What classifies osteo-porosis
Dec. Bone strength due to de-mineralization of bone
What classifies Osteo-malacia /Rickets
Increase in Osteoid (matrix non mineral part) due to low vit.D
What classifies paget’s disease?
When you have increased osteo-clast cells, resorbing the bone alot and then the formation is abnormal . Results :inc hydroxproline and ALP findings
Osteo-genesis imperfecta is a result of?
Collagen problem.. non minreal osteoid problem
Osteo-petrosis is weird because?
Decrease of osteo-clast function.. not resorbing bone.. get rock solid hard
Renal osteodystrophy is?
Kidney not working. results in hyper-parathyroidism making pth to resorb bone .. low 25(oh)D.. because first the liver makes 25(oh)D but then the kidneys convert it to make 1,25(oh)D which makes not functioning.. and 1,25(oh)d we saw was good for ca absorbtion, and ca is good for bone
Ostetis fibrosa
inc.PTh disorder.. due to a 2nd disorder which is affecting the pituitary organ
Marker for bone formation
PINP / PICP/ ALP / Osteocalcin /
Marker for bone resorption
ICTP , CTX, TRACP5b , Cathepsin K
