Chap-19 Bone metabolism Flashcards
What is bone made up of ?
Minerals (with osteoid) + connective tissue with calcium salts
How is bone made?
2-4weeks osteoclast resorb (with H+ acid env)
Osteoblast come to the site to fill the cavity with osteoid(matrix)
4-6month later osteoid become mineralized with salts.
What does a dec in estrogen trigger in menopausal women?
Bone resorbtion with decreases bone mass
what does osteoporosis mean?
The process of adding bone and removing bone is imbalanced.
Decrease bone strength
Osteopenia is a disorder of:
ca
P
PTH
vit.D
Osteomalacia and rickets
Osteoid defect = inc. osteoid, due to vit.D deficiency
Rickets=kids version
What is characteristics of Paget’s?
Inc. Osteoclastic bone resorption and excessive bone formation.
Weak bones and deformed bones result.
Inc. URINARY hydroxyproline [ ] + Inc. ALP , with normal ca and P
What is osteogenesis imperfecta a disorder of?
Abnormal synthesis of collagen fibers
Osteo-pterosis
Failure of osteoclast mediated bone resorption to be there.. no bone removing
= Increase bone strength.. very solid
Renal osteodystrophy
renal failure causing other bone problems
Osteitis fibrosa
High PTH
What markers are there for bone formation?
PINP
PICP
BAP
Osteocalcin
What markers are there for bone resorption?
Collagen cross link
Deoxypyridonoline
TRACP5b
