Chaney et al (2004) Flashcards
Operant condition
Learning through consequences from a stimuli and a response.
Background to Chaney
Issue for children taking asthma medication as often as they should and struggle with deep breathing technique.
Method of Bandura
Field experiment conducted in Australia using repeated measures design.
Aim
To show the funhaler can provide positive reinforcement, which leads to improved adherence to medication by young adults.
IV of Chaney
Breath a take and funhaler
DV of Chaney
Adherence to prescribed medication regime.
Sample of Chaney
32 aged 1.5-6 years with a mean age of 3.2. Gave parental consent and took part in questionnaire and phone interview.
Procedure of Chaney
Gave same dosage - no significant difference was observed. Used funhaler for 2 weeks and matched questionnaires were completed by parents after breath a take and funhaler. Data collected from self report on ease of use and compliance and parents and children attitudes. Random call to parents half way through.
Findings of Chaney
Funhaler had improved parental and child compliance. 38% more used funhaler. 60% more children took four of more cycles. More parents reported always successful in medicating their child.
Conclusion
Improved adherence and satisfactory can be used for young asthmatics. Funhaler improved measure of clinical outcome. Functional incentive devices may improve health of children. More research is needed for efficiency of treatment.
How does Chaney link to developmental area ?
Developmental because it is illustrating another way in which children behaviour can be influenced by external factors.
How does Chaney link to behaviourist perspective ?
Behaviourist because of the way it provides empirical support for operant conditioning. Results found increased adherence due to positive reinforcement of Funhaler.
