Bandura (1961) Flashcards
What was the aim of Bandura?
To see whether children will imitate aggressive behaviour, even in a different environment and without a model present.
First hypothesis on agression bandura
Children shown aggressive models will show more aggressive behaviour resembling models.
Second hypothesis on non agressive bandura
Children shown non-aggressive models will show less aggressive behaviour.
Third hypothesis on gender of children in Bandura
Boys will show more aggressive behaviour than girls.
Fourth hypothesis on sex of models.
Children will imitate same sex models behaviour to a greater degree than opposite behaviour.
Method of Bandura
Laboratory experiment with an observation.
Experimental design of Bandura
Independent measures design.
Sample of Bandura
72 children from Stanford nursery school. (36 boys and 36 girls) Average age of 3–5. .
How were children matched in Bandura?
Matched through procedure that rated them on levels of aggression using 5 point rating scale by experimenter and nursery teacher.
Measured both verbal and physical aggression. Randomly assigned control group or two experiment groups.
How many children were in each group in Bandura?
-24 in aggressive role model group.
-24 in non aggressive model group.
-24 in control group.
IV1in Bandura
IV1= role model whether children witnessed aggressive or non aggressive role model.
Control = no exposed to model.
IV2 of Bandura
IV2= sex of the model, male or female.
IV3 of Bandura
IV3= sex of child, male or female.
DV of Bandura
Amount of imitative behaviour and aggression measure by male model and observer at 5 second intervals through a one way mirror. Physical or verbal aggression.
Procedure: phase 1( modelling) Bandura
Taken individually and model joined them. Told to deign picture using colours and stickers. Model sat in opposite corner with mallet and bobo doll. Experimenter left. Model sat for 5 min then was aggressive to bobo doll.
Procedure: Phase 2 (aggressive arousal room) Bandura
Has attractive toys and could play with them.
After 2 min, experimenter said they reserved toys for other children. Then went to room 3( experimental room)
Procedure: Phase 3 Bandura
Aggressive toy= mallet, bobo doll
Non aggressive toy= tea set, crayons
Experimenter sat quietly whist child played. Child was observed through one way mirror by male model. Second experimenter observed independently. Observers didn’t know what experimental group pots were in. Recorded what child did every 5 seconds.
Imitative response in Bandura
Physical = specific act imitated
Verbal = phrases were imitated
Partially imitative responses in Bandura
Uses mallet on toys rather than bobo.
Non imitative aggressive responses
Punches bobo doll, aggressive acts directed at other toys rather than bobo. Aggressive gun play.
Non aggressive verbal responses
“He keeps coming back for more”
Results for IV 1 in Bandura
Children in aggressive condition showed significantly more imitation of physical and verbal aggressive behaviour.
Results for IV3 in Bandura
Overall, boys showed more imitative physical aggression than girls.
Results for IV2 in Bandura
Behaviour of male model exerted greater influence than female model.
Conclusions in Bandura
Children can learn behaviour through observation and imitation.
Boys and girls can learn verbal aggression from same sex adult.
How does Bandura link to developmental area?
Developmental because of the way it shows how childrens behaviour can be influenced by behaviour of adult role models.
How does Bandura link to behaviourist perspective ?
Behaviourist because of the way it provided empirical support for SLT. Shown through children imitate aggressive role models.
