Ch9 Nervous System - Somatic Diseases & Conditions Flashcards
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)
idiopathic atrophy of the neurons in the brain (we don’t know what causes it)
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
aka Lou Gehrig’s disease; degeneration of skeletal motor neurons (Steven Hawking); idiopathic
Bell’s Palsy
hemiplegia of the face. Cranial nerve 7 stops working; could be from a virus or trauma
Cerebral Aneurysm
localized ballooning of vessel in the brain
Cerebral Contusion
brain bruise
Cerebral Palsy (CP)
usu due to trauma during birth or in the womb; brain goes without oxygen for too long and causes it to not develop normally
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)
loss of blood supply in the brain (“stroke”)
Hemorrhagic Stroke
ruptured aneurysm
Ischemic Stroke
artery blocked
Coma
brain turns off everything except vital body functions
Concussion (TBI)
bruising/injury to brain from sports/trauma that causes?
Dementia
precursor to Alzheimer’s disease or may not progress at all
Epidural hematoma (EDH)
bleeding from trauma on, over, upon the dura mater and skull; can cause pressure (intracranial pressure) to increase
Epilepsy
disease that causes seizures; arrhythmia of brain (abnormal firing of neurons)
Gullain-Barre Syndrome; GB Syndrome
inflam. of PNS post infection; progressive muscle weakness that may lead to paralysis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
autoimmune disease that causes degen. of myelin; brain messages don’t get transmitted correctly; paralysis
Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
disease of brain which causes tremors
Poliomyelitis (polio)
viral infection of the central nervous system that causes paralysis
Shingles
herpes (chicken pox) viral infection that causes breakout along ribs; treated w/ antivirals
Subdural Hematoma
same as Epidural Hematoma except bleed is underneath dura mater
Syncope
fainting
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
warning sign of a stroke; angina is to heart attack as TIA is to stroke
Tremor
abnormal contractions that is seen in parkinson’s disease
