Ch6 Diseases & Disorders Flashcards
Aneurysm
localized enlargement of an artery; due to atherosclerotic damage and sometimes HBP
Angina
severe chest pain due to ischemia of myocardium, usually happens during exertion. Pain will resolve after they stop what they are doing.
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
end-stage heart disease where ventricles are so damaged they can no longer pump blood effectively. Lt-sided blood sacks up, resulting in pulmonary edema.
Coronary artery disease (CAD)
plaque buildup in the arteries of the heart
Atherosclerosis
fat plaque that adheres to and hardens arteries
Arrhythmia
absence or lack of rhythm in heart beat (SA Node -> AV Node -> Rt/Lt bundle branckes -> purkinje fibers)
Bradycardia
slow heart rate/pulse
Tachycardia
fast heart rate/pulse (above 90 BPM)
Shock
peripheral blood flow is insufficient back to the heart to replenish oxygenated blood to system. (lightheadedness, dizzy, low BP, weak pulse)
Embolus
blood clot that is circulating
Thrombus
blood clot that is stuck somewhere in the body
Heart Murmur
abnormal heart sound due to valve problems (typically occur in AV valves)
Auscultation
listening to the heart w/stethescope (ability to hear heart murmurs)
Hypertension
diagnosis of high BP
Hypotension
diagnosis of low BP
