ch.8- Memory Flashcards
encoding
the process of info into the memory system- for example by extracting meaning
storage
the retention of encoded info over time
retrieval
the process of getting info out of memory storage
sensory memory
immediate, very brief recording of sensory info in the memory system
short-term memory
activated memory that holds a few items briefly such as the 7 digits pf a number while editing before the information is stored or forgotten
long-term memory
the relatively permanent and limitless store house of the memory system, includes knowledge, skills, and experience
working memory
focuses on conscious, active processing of incoming auditory and visual-spatial info and of info retrieved from long-term memory
automatic processing
unconscious encoding of incidental info like space time and frequency and of well-learned info like word meanings
effortful processing
encoding that requires attention and conscious effort
iconic memory
a momentary sensory memory of visual stimuli; a photographic memory lasting a few tenths of a second
echoic memory
a momentary sensory memory of auditory stimuli; lasts 3-4 seconds
long-term potentiation (LTP)
an increase in a synapse’s firing potential after brie, rapid stimulation. Believed to be a neural basis for learning and memory
implicit memory
retention independent of conscious recollection (aka non declarative)
explicit memory
memory of facts and experiences that one can consciously know (aka declarative)
Anterograde amnesia
loss of the ability to create new memories
