defense mechanism where people can deal with socially unacceptable impulses, feelings, and ideas in social acceptable ways.
reaction formation
defense mechanism where ego switches unacceptable impulses into their opposites
projection
defense mechanism where people disguise their impulses by attributing them to others
displacement
defense mechanism that shifts impulses to a more acceptable or less threatening object or person
projective test

Thematic apperception test (TAT)

most widely used projective test, a set of inkblots that identify people’s inner feelings by analyzing their interpretations of the blots

a test like the MMPI developed by testing a pool of items and then selecting those that discriminate between groups
